Appropriate age of mammogram?
What is the appropriate age for a woman to get a mammogram?
My birth mother had both breasts removed due as a result of breast cancer. My doctors tell me that at my current age of 30 that it is too early to get a mammogram. If that is the case, can you please explain what early detection is?
Depends on maternal cancer history
The greatest determining factor in terms of what age you should get a screening depends on the age of your birth mother when she developed breast cancer.
It is recommended that women start mammogram screenings about 5 to10 years prior to the earliest diagnosis in the family or by age 40, whichever is earlier.
It is also highly recommended that women go to a doctor to get a breast exam one to two times per year. Women should also learn how to perform breast examinations on themselves.
