Avandia and Heart Risks

Avandia (diabetes medicine) and heart risks

Independent research studies find that Avandia (a diabetes medicine) increases a patient's risk of heart of complications. An article in the Journal of the American Medical Association suggested that patients can receive the same benefits from Avandia by taking a similar diabetes drug called Actos, but subject themselves to lower heart risks.

FDA is currently deciding what to do with the diabetes drug. Glaxo Smith Kline argues that based on their trials, Avandia does not subject patients to higher risks of heart diseases, stroke or death.

The JAMA study suggested that 47,000 patients who took Avandia for diabetes between 1999 and 2009 suffered a heart attack, stroke, heart failure or death as a result of taking the drug.
