Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a condition where the parts of a woman's body which regulates ovulation and the reproductive cycle (pituitary gland in the brain and ovaries) overproduce certain hormones causing women to develop hormonal imbalances and irregular menstrual periods. Typically woman who suffer from PCOS develop a number of cysts around their ovaries (polycystic). PCOS can affect women in many ways ranging from infertility and excess body hair to cardiovascular and metabolic issues. PCOS is one of the most common endocrine conditions and affects roughly 4%-8% of women of reproductive age.
