What tests are available to diagnose ovarian cancer?
Diagnosing ovarian cancer
A pelvic exam and an ultrasound can diagnose whether the ovaries need more testing. Ultrasound. An ultrasound can produce images of the ovaries that can determine if they are enlarged or if there are any abnormal growths on the surfaces of the ovaries. An ultrasound cannot distinguish the difference between a harmless cyst and a cancerous tumor.
CA125 Blood test. A blood test can also measure the level of CA125, a protein secreted by cancer cells. Women with ovarian cancer tend to have higher levels of CA125, but not always. Other conditions can also cause higher levels of CA125.
Exploratory Laparoscopy. Laparoscopy is a small surgical procedure that involves inserting a camera through the belly button and viewing the ovaries and abdominal tissues. The doctor or surgeon will then use the camera to find any evidence of cancer cells. A sample piece of tissue or fluid may be taken from any suspicious areas and evaluated by a pathologist.
