What tests are available for trichomoniasis?
Trichomoniasis testing
Testing of trichomoniasis in women is usually accomplished by microscopic examination of samples taken from a vaginal swab. In women, the doctor collects the specimen during a pelvic exam by taking a vaginal fluid sample using a cotton swab. The sample is then placed onto a microscopic slide and analyzed by a laboratory. An examination in the presence of trichomoniasis may also reveal small red ulcerations on the vaginal wall or cervix.
Diagnosis is more difficult for males and should be tested using both urethral swabs and urine samples.
