What is molluscum contagiosum?
Molluscum Contagiosum is a skin condition caused by a virus that forms characteristic shiny, dome-shaped papules (small, raised bumps) on the skin. It mainly affects children or adults with weakened immune systems. The type 1 strain is more common especially among children, while type 2 usually affects sexually active adults. The virus is spread in humans from direct skin-to-skin contact. The virus can also spread from the initial source of infection to other parts of the skin. Molluscum contagiosum is highly infectious in children and can be spread from direct skin contact as well as indirect contact from clothing, toys or objects. Children should be taught the importance of proper hygiene during active infections.
