What are the treatments for trichomoniasis?

Treatments for trichomoniasis

Trichomoniasis is easily treated with a single 2 gram dose of metronidazole (Flagyl) taken by mouth. Because trichomoniasis is an STD, sexual partners should also be treated.

While metronidazole cures almost 97% of all trichomoniasis patients, There is a small but increasing trend of trichomoniasis resistance to standard metronidazole therapy. The resistance can usually be overcome with an increased dosage of metronidazole. Also, tinidazole appears to be an attractive alternative to metronidazole. Tinidazole stays in the body longer than metronidazole and has been effective in some cases of trichomoniasis that were resistant to metronidazole.

Recent trials have found that treatment of T vaginalis infection in pregnancy may carry increased risk for prematurity and low birth weight. However, more studies are needed study the risks of metronidazole and pregnancy. At present time, the Center for Disease Control is still recommends treating infected pregnant women with metronidazole.
