Treatments for syphilis

Treatment of primary and secondary syphilis involves a single dose of injected penicillin. Syphilis treatment with penicillin rarely fails to cure the disease. Other antibiotics have been evaluated to treat syphilis. A recent trial suggested that a single-dose azithromycin is as effective in treating early syphilis as benzathine penicillin. However, there are concerns that some strains of T. pallidum may be resistant to azithromycin.
