What are the treatments for atopic dermatitis (eczema)?

Although there is no cure for eczema, there are many eczema treatments that can help improve the symptoms of skin itching and dryness. The most effective treatment for eczema involves daily skin care to keep the skin moisturized.

Treatments for eczema:

  • Emollients are creams that moisturize and hydrate the skin. Emollients can also reduce itching and inflammation from eczema. Moisturizers are most effective when applied immediately after a 20-minute bath using neutral pH soaps.
  • Topical steroids are used to reduce skin inflammation and help with scaly skin and itching. Long term usage of steroid creams may cause thinning of the skin and must be used with care.
  • Antibiotics are used to treat skin infections but do not treat the underlying eczema condition.
  • Allergen free dietary restrictions are recommended for patients who are hypersensitive to certain foods.
  • Calcineurin inhibitors (Tacrolimus, Pimecrolimus) can benefit patients with severe eczema. Side effects are still unknown.

Unknown or unproven treatments for eczema:

  • Vitamin E supplements
  • Fish oil supplements
  • Allergen mattress covers (dust mites) may not always improve eczema conditions.
