What are the treatment options for perioral dermatitis?

Treating perioral dermatitis

The first line of treatment involves trying to identify the cause of irritation and discontinuing its usage. Patients should keep a detailed record of any application of cosmetic products or topical steroid creams.

Medications to treat perioral dermatitis:

  • Oral antibiotics (tetracycline, doxycycline)
  • Oral erythromycin
  • Topical metronidazole

Medications should be taken properly for the recommended length of time, which may last 6 to 12 weeks. Perioral dermatitis treatment is usually very effective, but can reoccur if the patient does not complete the treatment. If left untreated, perioral dermatitis can become chronic and may leave scars.
