Symptoms of dysmenorrhea (menstrual cramps)
The level of pain varies widely between individuals. Menstrual cramps generally start within hours of the initial menstrual flow. Menstrual cramps are usually strongest during the first 2 days of menstruation. Secondary dysmenorrhea pain often persists beyond the menstrual cycle and last longer than 2 or 3 days.
The symptoms of menstrual cramps include:
- Lower abdominal pain
- Pain may come and go
- Pain that travels to the hips, upper legs, or lower back
More severe menstrual cramps symptoms may include stomach pain, vomiting, or diarrhea.
