What are the different types of hives?

Types of Hives

Hives are classified according to how long the hives last on the skin. Acute conditions last 1 day up to 6 weeks. Chronic hives last for months to years. Hive types can also be categorized according to the triggers that cause a skin reaction.

Acute hives – usually form spontaneously and resolves within one day. Most hive reactions are acute, especially in children.

Chronic hives – recurrence of hives at least 2x a week that lasts for months to years. Most cases of chronic hives are found in adults. Most physical triggers that cause chronic hives cannot be identified.

Physical or Contact hives – skin reactions that form when skin directly contacts an irritant. Insect bites, animal hairs, saliva, alcohol, or some antibiotics are common causes of hives. Exposing skin to excessive hot or cold temperatures can also cause hives in some people. Hives caused by physical triggers are usually last about an hour.
