Causes of menopause

Menopause is caused by a decline in estrogen hormone production by the ovaries. In a normal menstrual cycle, the ovaries produce hormones that results in the release of a single egg. During menopause, the follicles (premature eggs) become resistant to hormonal stimulation, which causes the ovaries to stop producing estrogen.

Menopause leads to a significant decrease in estrogen levels in women. Many of the symptoms associated with menopause are believed to be caused by the drop in circulating estrogen levels in the body.

Causes of menopause include:

  • Normal biological aging. the decline in the production of estrogen by the ovaries causes irregular menstruation and ultimately causes a stop in menstruation.
  • Hysterectomy. surgical removal of the uterus may lead to early menopause. Removal of the ovaries will immediately cause menopause.
  • Smoking.  smoking cigarettes can cause early onset menopause.
