What are the causes of cervical cancer?

Cervical cancer causes

Cervical cancer is caused by abnormal changes in cells due to HPV infection. HPV infections are the cause of 99.7% of all cervical cancers. There are over 100 types of HPV strains. Around 15 strains are considered high risk for cervical cancer, in particular types 16 and 18. HPV types 16 and 18 are responsible for 70% of all cervical cancers. These HPV strains cause abnormal changes in cervical cells that may lead to cervical cancer. Most often, the immune system can clear the HPV infection and the cervix heals on its own. In cases of cervical cancer, the infection can persist for years before turning cancerous.
