What are fungal infections of the feet (athlete's foot)?

Fungal infections of the feet (Athlete’s Foot/tinea pedis)

A foot fungal infection (Athlete’s foot) usually develops in the space between the toes and causes skin itching and burning. The fungus that causes infection thrives in moist and warm conditions. Athlete’s foot can be spread between humans as well as objects or infected floors. A study has shown that large quantities of fungal growth are often found in the floors of locker rooms and pool decks.

Symptoms of Athlete’s foot include:

  • Itching and burning of the skin between toes
  • Flaky or peeling skin
  • Cracking, pain or bleeding of skin in severe cases

Treatment of athlete’s foot consists of topical antifungal treatment for most mild cases, although reinfection often occurs in many people. For more severe cases of Athlete’s foot, an oral antifungal medication may be necessary. Bacterial infection can also occur along with Athlete’s foot. To treat the bacterial infection, it may be necessary to take an antibiotic. Another simple bacterial treatment is applying a 3% acetic acid solution to the infected skin.

To prevent Athlete’s foot, it is important to avoid walking barefoot in public gyms or pools. Feet should also be kept as cool and dry as possible by using special breathable socks and shoes. Footwear can be treated regularly with antifungal powders or sprays.
