Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) treatment for skin

What is a Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peel used for?

TCA peel are most often used to treat:

  • Fine surface wrinkles
  • Superficial blemishes
  • Uneven Pigmentation
  • Acne

How do Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peels work?

Although TCA peels can be administered in various concentrations, medium concentration TCA peels are most common and often applied as a cream using a cotton or foam applicator. The treatment takes about 10-15 minutes. Some doctors will administer TCA peels using a non-cream solution in an attempt to obtain a deeper penetrating peel.

How long will it take to heal from a TCA peel

After the TCA peel, the patient's skin will be inflammed and feel like it was sunburned. A combination of paste mixture and ice will often be used to reduce the inflammation. The healing process takes about a week, much quicker than a phenol peel.

Depending on what type of skin condition the TCA peel was used to address, it could take multiple treatments until the patient notices a significant result. However most patients will see a noticeable result soon after the initial procedure. The results from a TCA will last anywhere between 6 months to a year.
